Enjoy, but use your brains

In Galatians 5 from verse 19 and in Romans 1 from verse 21 a large list of sins is named that gave Christianity the image of ‘you can’t do anything fun’. Among others: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery, covetousness, drunkenness, orgies, deceit.

Here the path of the church and the world divide according to the well known poster into a straight road to hell and a narrow road to your salvation. The message of this picture is: if you can control yourself you are suitable material for the Kingdom of Heaven. read more »

Geniet, maar gebruik je hersens

In Galaten 5 vanaf vers 19 en in Romeinen 1 vanaf vers 21 wordt een hele rij zonden opgenoemd, waardoor het christendom een ‘je mag niks leuks’-imago heeft gekregen. Genoemd worden onder andere: onreinheid, hoererij, losbandigheid, dronkenschap, zwelgpartijen, overspel en trouweloosheid. Hier scheiden zich de wegen van de kerk en de wereld volgens de overbekende poster in de brede weg die tot verderf leidt en het smalle pad naar je behoud. De boodschap van deze prent is dat, als je je weet te beheersen, je geschikt materiaal bent voor het Koninkrijk der Hemelen.

Als ik zo’n poster had, zou ik hem in de prullenbak laten zakken, want grotere onzin is er niet. read more »

Should or shouldn’t we keep the law (of Moses)? This is a repeating question among Christians. We don’t have to keep the food laws since Peter had a vision about it, but how can we reconcile that with Jesus’ statement that “not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law”? What are we allowed to do and what not? What is the role of the law today? read more »

Moeten we ons nu wel of niet aan de wet (van Mozes) houden? Dit is een terugkerende vraag in Christelijke kring. De spijswetten hoeven we niet te houden sinds het visioen van Petrus, maar hoe rijmen we dat met Jezus’ uitspraak: “er zal niet één letter of komma van de wet worden afgeschaft”? Wat mogen we wel en wat mogen we niet? Wat is nu nog de rol van de wet? read more »

Honour God (CWL-4)

I am a great fan of the Marvel-gods. Especially Loki en Thor are great characters, are good looking, seem quiet approachable and above all, they are so human. You embrace them automatically and give them a place in your heart.

The God of the Bible seems to lack all these qualities. Most bleak image of God is that of a grim, demanding old man without a sense of humour who is way high above us. The other end of the spectrum is that of a sugar daddy who has created you because He has a destination for you and blesses you with everything you need to reach this destiny, and more. read more »

God eren (KZL 4)

Ik ben een enorme fan van de Marvel-goden. Vooral Loki en Thor zijn geweldige karakters, zien er goed uit, lijken heel benaderbaar en zijn vooral lekker menselijk. Je omarmt ze als vanzelf en geeft ze een plekje in je hart.

De God van de bijbel lijkt deze eigenschappen te moeten missen. read more »

Church without labels 3 – What exactly is the problem with sin?

At an Alpha course someone asked me; “why do we have to ask for forgiveness from God when we lye to someone. What has God to do with it when I tell a little lye?” A very good question that made me think. I was used to ask for forgiveness for these kinds of sins, but why was it a sin? What is His problem when I am jealous, or eat pork or transgress an other command? Why do we have all those rules anyway? When there are no rules, we can’t transgress them and then we wouldn’t have any problem with sin, isn’t is? Because even Paul says; “I would not have known what sin was had it not been for the law (…) for apart from the law, sin was dead.” (Romans 7:7,8) read more »
