I believe so I do – what? 4

A lot of people believe God only blesses if you obey the rules. They think the blessing and curse of the law are still valid today and not only for the Jews but also for Christians and the non believers. They presume that, when everybody behaves okay, God will bless our country, or our church or our family.

On the other hand they believe that Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law. So you should say the curse of the law no longer applies to us. If we violate the law, if we disobey the rules, if we sin, there are no sanctions, no curses, any more. God causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.

We don’t need to press our fellow countrymen or church members into good behaviour to avoid punishment or to obtain blessings. The ten commandments are still very good rules though. When you apply them the quality of your life will certainly improve because they are wisdom of God.

You can see this as a blessing, but also the blessing of the law doesn’t ‘work’ any more. You can’t ‘earn’ blessings by behaving in a good way either. The law with its commands and regulations is set aside, as Paul tells the Ephesians. It is all about mercy now.

So again I ask, does God give you his Spirit and work miracles among you by the works of the law, or by your believing what you heard?”

If you are not familiar with the blessing and the curse of the law, read Deuteronomy 11 (:26-28) and Galatians 3 (:10-14)
